Adam Niemerg, an Illinois state representative, has linked support for far-left candidates to challenges faced by Chicago schools and a growing interest in school choice. This statement was made during an interview.
"They continue to support radical socialist candidates who promote Marxist ideology—one of many reasons Chicago public schools are failing, and why so many parents are supporting school choice," said Adam M. Niemerg, State Representative from Illinois.
In the 2024–2025 period, debates over education in Illinois have focused on the performance of Chicago Public Schools and the future of school choice programs such as the Invest in Kids tax-credit scholarship. Teachers' unions have argued that public funding should continue to support district schools, while advocates have pushed for the reinstatement of scholarships for low-income families following their expiration in 2023. This issue highlights statewide divisions regarding equity and funding priorities, according to the Associated Press.
Chicago Public Schools reported an 85% graduation rate in 2023, with only 31% of students meeting reading standards and 19% achieving math benchmarks. District leaders cited progress since the pandemic; however, data revealed ongoing proficiency gaps among racial and economic groups, indicating uneven recovery across Chicago schools, as reported by Axios Chicago.
Illinois concluded its Invest in Kids scholarship program at the end of 2023, impacting approximately 9,700 students who had utilized private school scholarships the previous year. In 2024, families and schools adjusted as remaining funds were depleted, sparking renewed calls for restoring school choice and raising debates over accountability and equity in education funding. This was reported by WBEZ Chicago.
Niemerg is a Republican representing Illinois House District 102 since 2021. He represents southeastern Illinois counties and serves on committees focused on appropriations and labor issues, according to information from the Illinois General Assembly.
