Champaign has received Ameren Illinois' Most Progressive City Award for the second year in a row.
"This award is a reminder of the impact we can each have when we work together to improve energy efficiency and reduce waste," Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen said. "I thank Ameren Illinois for this award and for continuing to assist the city toward its goal of becoming a model for environmental sustainability.”
Between last summer and this summer, residents and businesses in Champaign worked on 1,025 energy-efficiency projects that saved 3.2 million kilowatt hours of electricity and more than 213,500 therms of natural gas over the year. Putting the savings in perspective, the city said its energy savings have had the same impact as taking 660 cars off the road.
“The Most Progressive City Award is our way of recognizing those communities that exemplify a strong commitment to environmental stewardship,” Ameren Illinois President Richard Mark said. “By taking advantage of Ameren Illinois’ energy-efficiency programs, these communities are reducing their impact on the environment, increasing their energy savings and improving their economic competitiveness.”
Champaign and Ameren have also partnered to help certain Champaign residents with 20 percent of the cost of improving insulation, sealing leaks, and other energy-efficiency upgrades.
Ameren Illinois is a Tilden-based natural gas and electric supplier with over 806,000 customers in central and southern Illinois.
