State Rep. Carol Ammons (D-Urbana) joined over 160 female state legislators in Washington, D.C. last week to participate in "Women at the Tables of Power," a forum for female leadership.
"A gathering of women leaders from across the nation like this was timely in a crucial moment of national change, as we strive to move beyond political posturing and work for the people of this country, invest in the economy, create good jobs, and protect vital programs that our communities rely on," Ammons said.
The three-day convention, hosted by Women's Action in New Direction (WAND), included policy briefings and panel discussions with women working at the top levels of the federal government.
“It’s our mission to empower women to act politically, " WAND Executive Director Susan Shaer said. "At this convening, women legislators and community leaders hone their skills, learn from high level briefings, and increase their talents for their crucial role from town hall meetings to international negotiating tables.”
Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) received special honors at the event, taking home the 2015 Torchbearer Award for her lifetime of service and support of female leadership.
