On October 3, 2025, Champaign Police detained Benny Loveless, a 44-year-old resident of Champaign, after being notified earlier in the week that a federal warrant had been issued for his arrest due to violations of his federal probation. The information about the warrant was distributed to patrol officers as part of standard procedure when someone wanted by authorities is believed to be in the community.

Loveless was seen and detained by a Champaign Police officer in the 300 block of N. Neil Street. After he was taken into custody at the scene, representatives from the United States Marshals Service arrived at the Champaign Police Department and formally arrested him on the federal warrant, taking him into federal custody.

The Champaign Police Department addressed reports circulating on social media that suggested Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was involved in Loveless's arrest. In response, they stated: "These claims do not align with the facts of the arrest. The Champaign Police Department complies with all state laws in service to the residents of Champaign. This includes the Illinois TRUST Act, which precludes local law enforcement from assisting federal authorities with civil immigration enforcement."
