Illinois falls to Penn State in Huff Hall Centennial volleyball match

The University of Illinois Fighting Illini women's volleyball team lost to #25 Penn State in four sets during the Huff Hall Centennial match on Sunday evening in Champaign.

Alyssa Aguayo recorded her eighth double-double of the season, finishing with 14 kills and a career-high 24 digs. She posted a .419 hitting percentage with only one error. Auburn Tomkinson also contributed 14 kills at a .312 rate, adding five digs and two blocks. Taylor de Boer matched their efforts with 14 kills, marking her 13th Big Ten match this season with double-digit kills.

Ashlyn Philpot had eight kills, five blocks, and four digs. Averie Hernandez set a season-high with seven kills and added 11 digs. Kenna Phelan registered her seventh double-double of the campaign by recording 50 assists and 10 digs. During the match, Phelan surpassed 2,000 career assists and also notched four blocks, an ace, and a kill.

Gabby Dean made her first collegiate start for Illinois, logging a career-high six kills along with two blocks and one dig. Taryn Kirsch provided 12 digs, five assists, and an ace; Kenzie Cogan added nine digs and a kill.

Head coach Chris Tamas commented on his overall record at Illinois moving to 161-105 after the loss. The Illini now have a historical record of 13-53 against Penn State. The team is currently 4-5 in four-set matches this season and holds a home record of 3-5 at Huff Hall.

Attendance for the centennial event was announced at 3,753.

Illinois (12-11 overall; 7-7 in Big Ten play) will continue its homestand next weekend by hosting Washington on Friday at 6 p.m., followed by #11 Wisconsin on Saturday at 8 p.m., both matches taking place at Huff Hall.
