Champaign County Community Coalition addresses gun violence prevention at monthly meeting

The Champaign County Community Coalition convened for its monthly meeting on July 9, 2025. The session included a presentation from Project Success – Rise-Up Gun Violence Prevention in Danville, showcasing a student-produced video to raise awareness and encourage the end of gun violence.

A significant update at the meeting was about the upcoming Black Mental Health and Wellness Conference set for September 20, 2025. Dr. Tiffany Gholson of Breaking Barriers International will be the keynote speaker. The event will feature eight sessions on topics including trauma-informed care, youth mental health, domestic violence, and racialized trauma.

Representatives from the Champaign County Firearm Safety Program presented their initiative to promote responsible firearm safety among community members.

Joy Academics shared an overview of their program, supported by the Champaign County Community Coalition’s summer initiatives. They highlighted academic and enrichment services available to students in the Champaign-Urbana area.

Local law enforcement provided updates on crime trends and discussed upcoming community engagement initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety and trust.

Justice Victim Advocates (JVAs) from the Equity and Engagement Department updated attendees on support services offered to victims of gun violence. Their presentation detailed the JVA team structure, integration with Community Gun Violence Reduction Blueprint partners, and direct services available to affected individuals.
