The Champaign Police Department recently completed a traffic enforcement campaign aimed at reducing impaired driving and addressing seatbelt violations. The initiative took place from June 20 to July 7, coinciding with the Independence Day holiday period. This effort was conducted in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and over 200 local law enforcement agencies.
During the campaign, Champaign Police engaged in proactive traffic monitoring alongside their regular duties. Additionally, they dedicated personnel for 17 hours specifically to traffic enforcement. Their focus was on maintaining a visible presence and targeting arterial routes that affect neighborhoods.
The results of this 18-day campaign included:
- 11 arrests for Driving Under the Influence
- 2 warnings and 6 citations for speeding
- 3 citations for driving without insurance
- 2 citations for driving without a valid license
- 2 citations for moving violations
- 1 warning and 1 citation for equipment violations
This initiative was supported by federal traffic safety funds managed by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
