The Champaign Police Department is set to participate in a statewide initiative aimed at reducing speeding on Speed Awareness Day, scheduled for July 23, 2025. This effort involves collaboration with the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police and numerous local law enforcement agencies across Illinois. The event, which has been promoted since 2016, seeks to encourage drivers to slow down and enhance road safety.
Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler emphasized the importance of adhering to speed limits: “The time you save by speeding is not worth the risk you pose to yourself and others on the road.” He added that the Champaign Police will maintain a visible traffic enforcement presence during Speed Awareness Day as a reminder that "speeding catches up with you."
Speed Awareness Day focuses on curbing excessive speeding through proactive enforcement and public awareness campaigns. The initiative aims to reduce crashes, prevent injuries, and save lives. During this campaign, officers will visibly enforce Illinois law to encourage compliance with posted speed limits. Those found speeding or violating other traffic rules may receive citations or written warnings when appropriate. In Champaign, efforts will particularly target arterial routes.
This traffic safety campaign receives funding from federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.
