As Independence Day nears, the City of Champaign is urging residents and visitors to prioritize safety by leaving fireworks displays to trained professionals. According to city officials, fireworks are responsible for starting more than 31,000 fires annually. Children under 15 years old account for 28% of estimated fireworks injuries.
To prevent injuries and property damage, officials recommend attending professional fireworks displays instead of using personal fireworks. However, if individuals choose to celebrate with legal fireworks, they should adhere to several safety guidelines.
Officials emphasize the importance of using only legal fireworks like sparklers, which can reach temperatures up to 1,200˚F. Children should not use them without adult supervision. In Champaign, any firework that requires lighting a wick, explodes, or shoots into the air is illegal.
Fireworks should be used outside and away from homes, people, trees, dry grass, or other flammable substances. A bucket of water and a fire extinguisher should always be nearby when handling fireworks. In case of injury from fireworks, seeking immediate medical attention is advised. For eye injuries specifically, it is important not to rub the injury as it may cause further damage.
The best way to avoid firework-related injuries is by attending public displays and allowing professionals to handle them. Residents can consult the City of Champaign Municipal Code of Ordinances for detailed information on what types of fireworks are allowed within city limits.
Additionally, residents are reminded to maintain working smoke alarms and regularly practice home escape plans in case of emergencies.
