The Big Ten Conference has released its preseason rankings and the Gymnasts to Watch lists. According to the league's coaches, the University of Illinois' gymnastics team is predicted to finish eighth among Big Ten programs.
"I, of course, have higher expectations for my program than [finishing eighth], but we will focus on letting the work and our actions speak rather than words," said head coach Nadalie Walsh. "This team has the friendship, unity, fire, and passion to be the best team Illinois has seen yet."
Two gymnasts from Illinois, freshman Chloe Cho and junior Arielle Ward, have been recognized on this year's Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch list.
"Chloe Cho and Arielle Ward being nominated as two Gymnasts to Watch for the University of Illinois is a great representation of our program," said Walsh. "Both of these women are talented, fiercely competitive, and have an absolute 'wow' factor about their gymnastics. I am looking forward to seeing them showcase themselves this year."
Cho previously achieved Level 10 state champion status and qualified for nationals. The Simi Valley native competed in the 2024 U.S. Championships, where she achieved personal bests in all-around competition over consecutive days.
Ward is entering her third season with Illinois after participating in all 16 meets last season, focusing mainly on vault and floor events. The Frisco native secured third place on vault at the 2024 Big Ten Championships with a score of 9.900, earning her a position on the All-Championship Team.
In addition to Illinois' rankings and nominees, other teams such as Michigan State were ranked first in the preseason coaches poll followed by UCLA and Michigan. The Gymnasts to Watch list includes athletes from various universities across the conference.
