Illinois redshirt freshman wrestler Kannon Webster has been recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, marking a first in the program's history. The announcement was made by the conference on Thursday, November 14.
Webster, who competes at 149 pounds, is currently ranked No. 10 by InterMat and boasts an undefeated record of 6-0 in his redshirt freshman season. His recent performance includes a perfect 5-0 weekend at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic tournament on November 10, where he earned the Hammer Award in the top 149-pound bracket. During this tournament, Webster pinned Harvard's Jaden Pepe in just over a minute, secured a decision victory against Alex Nini from Rutgers with a score of 4-1, and triumphed over Cross Wasiliewski from PENN with an 8-7 decision in the final match.
On November 9, prior to his success at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, Webster achieved two bonus point victories during matches against Binghamton and Arizona State. He won by technical fall against Ivan Garcia from Binghamton with a score of 21-3 and obtained a major decision over Jesse Vasquez from Arizona State with a score of 21-7.
