Ashlyn Philpot has been recognized as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, according to an announcement made by the league on Monday.
Philpot played a significant role in helping the Illini secure two victories last week, including a notable win against #20 USC. As a middle blocker, she achieved consecutive double-digit kill performances over the weekend, totaling 28 kills with an average of 3.5 kills per set and a .511 hitting percentage. The North Carolina native also recorded 10 blocks for an average of 1.25 blocks per set.
In the match against the ranked Trojans, Philpot set a new career-high with 17 kills while maintaining a .433 hitting percentage. Her defensive efforts included four blocks and one dig.
The following day, in the game against Ohio State, Philpot contributed 11 kills with a .667 hitting percentage. She led her team with six blocks and added two digs.
Philpot is the first freshman to receive this award since her teammate Raina Terry was honored in 2020.
