Brooke Mosher achieved a significant milestone for the Illinois volleyball team by recording the program's first triple-double since 1998. This accomplishment came during an intense five-set match against Wake Forest at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, marking the finale of the Cyclone Invitational.
The Fighting Illini emerged victorious, improving their season record to 6-0 and maintaining a perfect record in five-set matches. Meanwhile, Wake Forest fell to 3-3 after this loss.
Mosher contributed significantly with 32 assists, 10 kills, and 10 digs. Raina Terry also had a standout performance with 20 kills leading the team's offense. On defense, Ashlyn Philpot added five blocks while Caroline Barnes recorded 17 digs.
In the opening set, Illinois secured an early lead thanks to a scoring run initiated by Averie Hernandez's serving. Despite Wake Forest's efforts to close the gap, Illinois claimed the set with a score of 25-17.
The second set saw Illinois trailing early but managed to close in on Wake Forest following back-to-back kills by Laynie Smith. However, they could not maintain momentum and lost the set 25-22.
Illinois regained control in the third set with key plays from Christina Martinez Mundo and Brooke Mosher. They maintained their lead despite challenges from Wake Forest and won the set 25-21.
The fourth set started unfavorably for Illinois as they fell behind early but managed to reduce their deficit before ultimately losing it 25-20.
In the decisive fifth set, three consecutive kills gave Illinois an edge that they maintained throughout. Terry's ace further extended their lead before closing out on a strong note with a final score of 15-8.
Looking ahead, Illinois will participate in another tournament at WKU where they are scheduled to face #22 Dayton on Friday at 1 p.m. CT.
