Archie McDaniel, a native of Bay City, Texas, has embarked on a new chapter in his coaching career as the linebackers coach for the University of Illinois' Fighting Illini. McDaniel's journey through football began in his hometown, where high school games were a significant community event. His playing career included being a three-year starter at Texas A&M from 2003 to 2005.
McDaniel transitioned into coaching after his playing days ended. His coaching career has taken him across various institutions in the southern United States. He started as a defensive assistant at Trinity Valley Community College and then returned to Texas A&M as a graduate assistant. Over the years, he held positions at Texas Southern, Tulsa, New Mexico, SMU, and Houston.
Reflecting on his move to Illinois, McDaniel stated: "No matter how good you think you've done at something and no matter how long you've been doing something, there are always opportunities for growth and improvement." He emphasized the importance of building trust with his players: "I'm coming in and presenting my genuine self to them."
Beyond coaching duties, McDaniel co-founded the Minority Coaches Advancement Association (MCAA) with Tremaine Jackson and Van Malone in 2020. The organization aims to address minority representation issues within coaching by providing resources such as mock interviews and networking opportunities.
"Our biggest focus is bringing awareness to the problem of minority representation," McDaniel said. Despite being new to Illinois' campus culture, he has quickly integrated himself into what he describes as the program's "famILLy" culture.
He credits his family support system for much of his success: "I've been extremely blessed... amazing support from my family." As he continues this journey with Illinois football, McDaniel remains committed to upholding these values both on and off the field.
