4-H youth recently participated in the North American International Livestock Exposition held from November 2 to 16 in Louisville, Kentucky. The event attracted over 27,000 livestock entries nationwide and included seven major youth judging contests.
Deb Hagstrom, a University of Illinois Extension specialist, emphasized the broader benefits of these competitions: “The value of the 4-H animal knowledge contests hosted by the North American goes well beyond any ribbons and trophies earned. Participating 4-Hers put into practice important life skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, stress management, perseverance, and public speaking. Developing these skills is where the real worth of these national contest experiences is found.”
The Illinois 4-H Horse Bowl team consisted of Hannah Wenzel from Saline County, Maya Woodard from Monroe County, Sydney Woodard from Monroe County, Annsley Healy from White County, and Eliza Engelhardt from Marion County. This team achieved fourth place among fifteen teams.
Another team representing Illinois was the 4-H Horse Judging Team with members Talisa Thomas from Whiteside County, Madelyn Mohr from Monroe County, Madalyn Schierloh from Stephenson County, and Talia Pierard from McLean County. They placed fifth overall in multiple categories including conformation division and reasons while securing sixth place in performance division.
Individually notable performances came from Talia Pierard who secured ninth place in the Conformation division and tied for sixth in reasons. Talisa Thomas also delivered commendable results.
Team selections occur at Illinois State Fair livestock events with support provided by the Illinois 4-H Foundation.
Illinois 4-H operates under University of Illinois Extension through its College of Agriculture, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences. It aims to cultivate leadership qualities among youth through practical engagement that enhances their readiness for future careers. Research indicates that participants are more likely to engage positively within their communities and make healthier lifestyle choices.
