Illinois opens Memorial Stadium's 100th anniversary season with an in-state showdown against Eastern Illinois on Thursday at 8 p.m. CT.
Head coach Bret Bielema enters his fourth year aiming for a fourth consecutive season-opening win. The Illini have previously defeated Nebraska (2021), Wyoming (2022), and Toledo (2023) under Bielema's leadership.
The 2024 squad includes both new and returning players, with six captains named for the season. Illinois has notably improved its roster through the transfer portal, securing three four-star transfers, tying for the sixth-most among the Big Ten's 18 teams.
Eastern Illinois ended its 2023 season with an 8-3 record and was recognized in the AFCA FCS Coaches Top 25 poll. They are predicted to finish second in the Big South-OVC preseason poll.
This will be the third meeting between Illinois and Eastern Illinois, with Illinois leading the series 2-0 from previous wins in 2006 and 2008. Mark Followill, J Leman, and Kylen Mills will cover the game on Big Ten Network, while Brian Barnhart, Carey Davis, and Michael Martin will handle radio commentary on Busey Bank Illini Sports Network.
Several updates regarding parking and tailgating have been announced for game day. Additionally, various fan engagement activities are planned, including an air raid siren sounded by former Illini basketball star Terrence Shannon Jr., discounted concessions during "Illini Hour," and a race event called "The Freaky Fast 77 Yard Dash."
A pop-up museum celebrating Memorial Stadium's history has been installed inside the Great West Hall. Concession prices have also been reduced for hot dogs this season.
Season ticket holders who purchased or renewed by April 1 receive a discount on concessions throughout the anniversary season. ICON members enjoy additional benefits such as field-level access during pregame warmups.
Illinois' offensive line boasts significant experience with a total of 96 career starts among its players. The team ranks fourth in career starts within the Big Ten.
Memorial Stadium's centennial celebrations include special events throughout the year, culminating in a rededication game against Michigan on October 19.
The historical ties between Illinois and Eastern Illinois extend beyond football, including connections through alumni and coaching staff.
