Senator Rose dedicates highway section to fallen hero Lieutenant Jared W. Southworth

State Senator Chapin Rose will honor the late Lieutenant Jared W. Southworth by renaming a section of Illinois 133 in Oakland as the “Lieutenant Jared W. Southworth Memorial Highway.” The dedication ceremony and sign placement event is scheduled for July 6th at 9:00 a.m. at the Oakland Square.

Senator Rose, who sponsored HJR 39, stated that this act honors Lieutenant Southworth, born on May 28, 1982, in Mattoon, Illinois. Raised in Oakland, Southworth graduated from Oakland High School in 2000 and later attended Lakeland College and Eastern Illinois University, where he participated in ROTC. He married Chrissy Lynn Royer in 2001.

Southworth served with distinction in the HHC 2/130 Infantry Division of the Illinois National Guard and was also a U.S. Army Ranger known for his commitment to "God, Family, Country." In addition to his military service, he worked as a part-time police officer in Oakland and was an esteemed community member. Lieutenant Southworth was killed on February 8, 2009, during operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

The public is invited to join friends and family at the dedication ceremony to honor Lieutenant Southworth's memory.
