Carle Foundation Hospital today announced that it is one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2023, according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients. This achievement puts Carle in the top 1% of hospitals nationwide for overall clinical performance across the most common conditions and procedures. Carle also receives the top ranking (#1) in Illinois for Pulmonary Care according to the new analysis.

This is the eighth consecutive year (2016-2023) Carle Foundation Hospital is among America’s 50 Best, and one of only two hospitals in Illinois to receive the America’s 50 Best Hospitals Award.

“Though we’ve faced some of the most challenging times in healthcare history, this team never lost sight of the responsibility we have to maintain the high-quality standards our patients deserve,” Carle Foundation Hospital President and Chief Nursing Executive, Elizabeth Angelo, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, CPHQ, said. “A recognition like this is only possible because of the dedicated expertise and compassionate care Carle team members offer the community every day.”

Healthgrades evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 31 of the most common conditions and procedures at nearly 4,500 hospitals across the country to identify the top-performing hospitals. This in-depth analysis also revealed Carle Foundation Hospital to be the highest quality and first in the state ranking for Pulmonary care. As the country continues to see significant health impact from the COVID-19 pandemic, access to consistent and specialized pulmonary care is critical. Hospitals recognized as top ranked in their state by Healthgrades are providing patients with consistently better-than-expected clinical outcomes.

“The pulmonary team at Carle Foundation Hospital brings unmatched specialized care to the central Illinois region and this recognition as the first in the state for pulmonary outcomes underscores the important service our team offers,” Associate Chief Medical Director of Acute Care and Pediatrics, David Chan, MD, said. “At a time when pulmonary services are as important as ever, we not only offer the latest medical technologies that help us customize care for each individual patient, but work hard to offer that care with a thoughtful and patient-centered approach.”

Carle BroMenn Medical Center also received quality accolades including Five-Star Distinctions in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeries for 2 Years in a Row (2022-2023); Five-Star Distinction for C-Section Delivery for 2 Years in a Row; and a Five-Star Distinction for Treatment of Sepsis for 3 Years in a Row (2021-2023). The dedication to maintaining high quality care in these areas have improved patient outcomes.

Carle Foundation Hospital was also recognized for the following achievements:

  • America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Pulmonary Care for 3 years in a row (2021-2023)
  • 2023 Coronary Intervention Excellence Award™
  • Gastrointestinal Care Excellence Award for 6 years in a row (2018-2023)
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery Excellence Award for 2 years in a row (2022-2023)
  • Pulmonary Care Excellence Award™ for 6 years in a row (2018-2023)
  • Five-Star Distinctions in Coronary Intervention Procedures, Treatment of Heart Attack, Treatment of Heart Failure, Treatment of Stroke, Treatment of COPD, Treatment of Pneumonia, Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeries, Treatment of GI Bleed, Treatment of Sepsis, Treatment of Pulmonary Embolism, and Treatment of Respiratory Failure.
This year’s analysis revealed significant variation between America’s Best 50 Hospitals and hospitals that did not receive the distinction. In fact, if all hospitals performed similarly to America’s 50 Best, over 150,000 lives could potentially have been saved.* Patients treated for heart failure at one of the 2023 America’s 50 Best Hospitals have, on average, a 22.8% lower risk of dying than if they were treated at a hospital that did not receive the award.* Patients treated at hospitals receiving a state ranking for Pulmonary Care have, on average, a 53.4% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that were not state ranked for Pulmonary Care.*

Carle Health continues to lead the region in health outcomes and brings an innovative approach to serving patients though high-quality and customized care.

“We’re proud to recognize Carle Foundation Hospital as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2023,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science at Healthgrades. “As one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals, Carle consistently delivers better-than-expected outcomes for the patients in their community and is setting a high national standard for clinical excellence.”
