Champaign officials are putting the finishing touches on a plan that paves the way for area restaurants and bars to soon add outdoor dining options.
In keeping with Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s five-phase Restore Illinois plan as it moves into the third phase allowing for such operations, city officials are now working with local businesses to “determine how seating can be provided in compliance with the state’s new guidelines.”
According to WCIA, plans are also in the works for three “Downtown Picnic Parks,” where patrons will be able to feast on local carryout orders. Plans for the parks are being developed in collaboration with the Champaign Park District.
As for the restaurant reopening plan, establishments will also be free to use private parking lots for outdoor dining, adding to the Curbside Pickup Program that has been in effect since late March.
“The city is working very quickly to finalize plans so our local restaurants can reopen safely using outdoor dining spaces,” Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen said. “We’re committed to finding innovative new ways to support our restaurant community and provide opportunities for the reopening in a safe and responsible way that is consistent with the state’s guidelines.”
City staffers are now actively working to complete those plans, with final input expected to soon come from the state.
