Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) had a very special guest at his side at the May 23 Senate floor debate.
After asking for quiet on the floor, Rose said he was honored and excited to introduce his friend.
“I am here today with Irwin Soliday, who turned 100 just a few months ago,” Rose said as the Senate floor began to applaud. “Hold on it gets better.”
He said Soliday proudly served the country fighting the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II in New Guinea as part of the 163rd Infantry 41st Division. But it got even better again, said Rose, who added Soliday shared a story with him earlier in the afternoon that when he was on a plane, the veteran ended up spending the ride playing cards with actor John Wayne.
“If we could give him a great round of applause, I would really appreciate it,” Rose said as the Senate floor was glad to do so, even standing while clapping for the war hero.
