CHAMPAIGN COMMUNITY UNIT SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 4 BOARD OF EDUCATION: Update On Unit 4 Facilities Projects

School

Champaign Community Unit School District No. 4 Board of Education issued the following announcement on May 23.

The school year may be wrapping up, but our facilities projects keep moving along!

Since the $183.4 million referendum passed in November 2016 and the District has acquired other properties using other funds, our project management team and Operations and Maintenance staff have been working diligently to coordinate all the pieces. In the coming months, you’ll see more progress as preliminary site work begins.

These projects will bring much-needed upgrades to benefit our students, staff and community. Thank you to the community for your support and feedback, to staff for your input, and to our leadership, the Capital Projects team, and the Facilities team for the work to move the projects forward.

Below is an update on each project as of May 2018.

Centennial

Spring 2018 - After meetings with District and school staff and two community info nights (January 10 and April 17), the project management team reviewed and incorporated feedback. Design will continue until the end of 2018.

Summer 2018 - Site prep work will begin and continue through the end of the year.

Spring 2019 - A groundbreaking event will be held (date to be determined). Construction will begin on the north and south additions.

Tommy Stewart Field

Summer 2018 - Construction (which began in Spring 2018) will continue through the summer.

August 2018 - The football field is scheduled to be ready for play!

September 2018 - A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be planned for the Central/Centennial football game Labor Day weekend.

Central

Spring 2018 - After meetings with District and school staff and two community info nights (January 10 and April 17), the project management team reviewed and incorporated feedback. Design will continue until the end of 2018.

Summer 2018 - Hazardous materials abatement and historic preservation and salvage will begin on adjacent acquired properties. Site prep work will begin and continue through end of the year.

Spring 2019 - A groundbreaking event will be held (date to be determined). Construction will begin for the multipurpose gym addition.

Dr. Howard

Spring 2018 - After meetings with District and school staff and two community info nights (January 23 and April 10), the project management team reviewed and incorporated feedback. Design will continue until the fall of 2018.

May 2018 - We will celebrate and say farewell to the original Dr. Howard building on Thursday, May 24 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

June 2018 - The campus will move to 1103 N. Neil St., Champaign (currently Columbia Center), where Dr. Howard will be housed during construction.

June 2018 - Hazardous materials abatement and historic preservation and salvage will begin.

September - December 2018 - The original building will be razed.

Early 2019 - Construction of the new building will begin.

March 2019 - A groundbreaking event will be held (date to be determined).

Edison

Summer 2018 - The project management team is working on logistics of the phasing for the Edison renovation so the project schedule can be finalized.

International Prep Academy

2020 - The project management team will gather input from staff and the community during the design phase.

2021 - Construction will begin.

South Side

Summer 2018 - The project is in the design phase, which means the project management team is working with District and school staff to envision what the building updates will look like. A community info night was held April 3 and the project management team is reviewing suggestions as the design continues to evolve. Design will continue until the end of 2018.

Spring 2019 - A groundbreaking event will be held (date to be determined).

McKinley Field

Spring-Fall 2018 - The McKinley field project is currently in the design phase, which means the project management team is working with District and school staff to envision what the updates will look like. They will be seeking community input in the near future. The project construction schedule is yet to be determined.

Spalding Park

Spring 2018 - After meetings with athletics staff, the Champaign Park District, and a community info night (January 31), the project management team reviewed staff and community feedback on design plans and incorporated suggestions.

Summer 2018 - Construction will begin in late May. A formal groundbreaking event is being scheduled in coordination with the Champaign Park District (date to be determined).
