Analysis: Sales tax funded 11 percent of City of Urbana budget in 2016

The City of Urbana's local sales tax brought in $6,132,725 in 2016, according to Illinois State Comptroller revenue data. Urbana, population 42,044, relied on its local sales tax to contribute 11 percent of total revenue that year.

Urbana levies a 1.5 percent sales tax. The average of four suburbs in Champaign County is 1.12. The high is 1.5 percent; the low is 0.5 percent.

Chambana Sun analyzed the sales tax collections in four Champaign County suburbs and found they generated a total of $24,492,049 in tax revenue in 2016. That was the equivalent of 13% spent by local government.
