The Gifford Village Board met Jan. 7 at the Gifford Village Building to discuss the possibilities for taking down the old village water tower.
Village officials said the next payment on the tower's insurance is due soon, and hinted that it would be in the village's favor to remove the tower before then.
Dave Atchley of MSA told the board that taking down the old village water tower would cost approximately $20,000. In response to the estimate, Trustee Dustin Ehler suggested the village look into companies that would dismantle the tower for scrap.
Ehler also recommended the village look into a "bioreactor" to help lower the village's nitrate levels. He said samples taken by the University of Illinois showed that the bioreactor would be successful and called on Gifford officials to present the solution to the EPA.
