The Urbana City Council voted 4-3 to reject a proposal that would have granted historic landmark status to the so-called Henson House at 619 W. Elm St.
The house was nominated by Brian Adams days before it was scheduled to be demolished. The proposal was advanced by the Urbana Historic Preservation Commission by a 4-2 vote.
The house was being considered based on its location on one of the city's original streets, its exemplary adherence to Dutch Colonial Revival architecture, its connection to early prominent Urbana citizens, and the prevalence of many of its original materials and features, including wall materials, footprint and massing.
In voting down the preservation request, the Council effectively supported the protest filed by property owner Hunsinger Enterprises.
