The League of American Bicyclists (LAB) recently presented the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) with a Silver Bicycle Friendly Business award.
The award recognizes MTD's efforts at promoting commuting by bicycle, including placing bike racks on buses and providing bike parking at the transit center.
"I welcome the news that the League of American Bicyclists is recognizing MTD as a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Business,” Champaign County Bikes Executive Director Jeff Yockey said. "This award recognizes MTD not for their work in the community, but their work and commitment to their employees. MTD practices what it encourages: an active transportation lifestyle.”
MTD is one of 73 businesses that received the designation this year, adding to a group of 1,132 bike-friendly businesses and government bodies in 49 states. As a result of the award, MTD will receive technical assistance and other resources as it continues making improvements that encourage a bike-friendly transit system.
“The business community’s investment in bicycling is playing a central role in making the country a safer, happier, and more sustainable place to live and work,” Amelia Neptune, LAB's Bicycle Friendly Business program manager said. “We applaud this new round of businesses, including MTD, for leading the charge in creating a bicycle-friendly America for everyone.”
