Urbana's sister city Zomba, Malawi has opened a successful large-scale composting operation based on the model of Urbana's Landscape Recycling Center.
Zomba officials visited the center three years ago and used information and inspiration gleaned there to craft their own system for separating compostable organic refuse from trash.
City officials said fertility is a major issue in Malawi, where more than one-third of the economy depends on agriculture but soil quality is often poor. The new facility has been a boon to local vegetable and flower growers, particularly those growing in cities.
The skill share between the two cities builds on a partnership that began in 2008 and has also produced a number of sanitary improvements for workers at Zomba's main hospital.
