The city of Urbana has selected six more trees for inclusion in its Legacy Tree Program.

The City Council created the program in 2013 to highlight and preserve the city's most significant trees.

An 80-foot sugar maple at 901 S. Busey Ave. with a 42-foot circumference, a 45-foot goldenrain tree at 715 W. Washington St., and an 85-foot chestnut oak at 711 W. Main St. were all selected for their size.

A hybrid oak at the Cunningham Children’s Home, a Hessei European ash at 2316 S. Cottage Grove Ave., and a compact tulip tree at 705 S. Busey Ave. were each selected for their rarity.

The new additions bring the Legacy Tree Program's total membership to nine.

Each tree in the program was nominated by an Urbana resident. Once residents nominate a tree they feel deserves recognition, the city's arborist contacts the property owners to seek permission to evaluate the tree based on size, species rarity and other characteristics. If the tree is deemed qualified for the Legacy Tree Program, the property owner will still have the final say, and can withdraw the tree from the program at any point.

Nominations can be made online at http://urbanaillinois.us/residents/things-do-see-visit/legacy-tree-program/how-program-works.
