State Rep. Carol Ammons (D-103), a strong supporter of legislation to provide access to life-saving cancer screenings, is urging Illinois residents to observe Breast Cancer Awareness month in October.

“Every year loved ones are lost by families across our state and community to breast cancer, which is why it is important that we bring attention to awareness campaigns that place a focus on research, prevention, screenings and treatments for this horrible disease,” Ammons said. “While technological advances over the years have helped further the fight to end breast cancer, they are only as effective as our ability to encourage regular cancer screenings and ensure access for all women.”

Ammon sponsored Illinois House Bill 3673 and Senate Bill 54, aimed at improving women’s health and reducing medical costs, which were both signed into law. She is also a supporter of budget proposals to protect the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer programs, which are currently unfunded after Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto.

“We cannot afford to allow women’s health issues to fall to the wayside as a result of Gov. Rauner’s extreme budgetary proposals,” Ammons said. “There are lives on the line and women are being forced to forego regular screenings due to lack of access to affordable mammograms, because our governor chooses to operate in the extreme. It is just plain wrong.”
