University of Illinois to Close Kirby Avenue Lane for Streetlight Removal
The University of Illinois has announced that it will be closing one westbound lane of Kirby Avenue between First Street and Fourth Street. The closure is necessary in order to remove a damaged streetlight. On November 30, 2023, a Naturalization Ceremony was held at the Parkland College Theatre, where 113 community members from 36 countries became United States citizens. The event, hosted by the Honorable Eric I. Shooting Investigation – 500 Block of N. Edwin Street
Champaign Police were dispatched at 8:54 p.m. on November 26, 2023, to the 500 block of N. Edwin Street for a report of a shooting with injuries. On-scene, officers located a 42-year-old male victim from Champaign with a non-life-threatening graze wound to the head. Officers and personnel from the Champaign Fire Department immediately rendered aid on-scene until the victim could be transported to an area hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Free Parking Offered in Downtown Champaign This December
To encourage residents and visitors to frequent Downtown Champaign businesses this holiday season, the City of Champaign is offering up to two hours of free parking in the Hill Street Parking Deck from December 1 through December 31, 2023. Hourly visitors parking longer than two hours will receive a two-hour discount off their parking fee.

Residential Fire – 1600 Block Parkside Terrace
The Champaign Fire Department responded to a fully involved detached garage fire in the 1600 block of Parkside Terrace, Thursday, November 23 at 2:16 p.m. Fire crews worked to keep the fire from extending into the home.

City of Champaign Again Earns Perfect Score on Municipal Equality Index for Inclusive Lgbtq+ Laws, Policies and Services
The City of Champaign is proud to announce that it once again earned the highest possible score on the Human Rights Campaign’s 2023 Municipal Equality Index. This is the twelfth consecutive year that the Human Rights Campaign Foundation has recognized the City for its inclusive LGBTQ+ laws, policies, and services as a part of their annual Municipal Equality Index (MEI). The MEI examines how inclusive municipal laws, policies, and services are of LGBTQ+ people who live and work there. As it did last year, the City achieved a score of 100 on the 2023 assessment – the highest possible score. Champaign joins just two other cities in Illinois (Rockford and Chicago) to receive a perfect score.

Resource Fair
On October 26, 2023, The Equity and Engagement Department and Neighborhood Services Department collaborated on a resource fair for Champaign residence. This fair took place from 4:00pm-6:00pm, in the parking lot of the commercial area shared with Blueprint Partner, Y on the Fly. There were more than 3 dozen people in attendance, even in midst of the light rain. There were many resources available for attendees to receive information. The event would not have been the success it was without participation from Parkland’s highway construction career program, the City of Champaign Police Department, CU Trauma Resiliency Initiative, Carle, Y on the Fly, and STRIDES. There was also music and food provided such as hot dogs, hamburgers, cotton candy, and chips.

On October 26, 2023, Tracy Parsons of the Equity and Engagement Department co-hosted News, Brews, and Beatz hosted by the Illinois Public Media. This installment discussed the health, wealth, and challenges of black owned businesses in Central Illinois. Special guests Matthew J. Simpson, of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and Tricia D. Teague, founder of the Soar Space Business Center were also in attendance to advance conversations around this topic.
