The City of Champaign has announced the activation of its sidewalk snow and ice removal ordinance following an overnight snowfall that brought at least two inches of accumulation. The requirement applies to sidewalks in the Downtown, Midtown, and Campustown areas.
According to city officials, property owners are required to clear their sidewalks within 24 hours of the Public Works Director’s declaration. The compliance period begins at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 10, 2025, with sidewalks needing to be cleared by 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
Sidewalks must be cleared either to their full width or to forty-eight inches, whichever is less. Property owners at corners are also responsible for clearing ramps to ensure passage from block to block. "Sidewalks not in compliance could be cleared by the City at the owner’s expense. The City appreciates the cooperation of property owners in making these sidewalks safer for pedestrians and those with multimodal needs for transportation," city officials stated.
A map showing affected areas and details about the Sidewalk Snow Removal Ordinance can be found on the City’s website at champaignil.gov/snow.
Residents and businesses are reminded not to place snow from their property into city streets as this can create hazards for vehicles. Additionally, all residents and businesses across Champaign are encouraged to clear their sidewalks for safer pedestrian travel and accessibility. Those located along designated Safe Routes to School are specifically encouraged to keep paths clear for students and parents; maps for these routes are available online at ccrpc.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/safe-walking-final.pdf.
