Illinois falls to No.20 Minnesota in straight sets on road

Illinois lost to No. 20 Minnesota in a straight-sets volleyball match on Wednesday night at Maturi Pavilion in Minneapolis.

Taylor de Boer led Illinois with 13 kills, reaching double digits in kills for the 11th consecutive match. She also contributed two blocks, one of which was a solo block. Kenna Phelan recorded her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with 18 assists and 10 digs, along with two kills.

Averie Hernandez had five kills, seven digs, and two assists. Taryn Kirsch registered nine digs, three assists, and served the first two aces of her collegiate career. Kenzie Cogan added seven digs, three assists—matching her career high—and two aces.

The opening set was closely contested. Both teams traded points before Minnesota took a slight lead after a short run. Illinois responded to tie the set at 14 and later at 21 but ultimately dropped the opener 26-24.

In the second set, Illinois started strong but Minnesota used a decisive 13-1 run to gain control and won the set 25-12.

Minnesota built an early lead in the third set as well. After trailing by ten points late in the frame, Illinois went on an 11-1 scoring run to tie it at 21. However, Minnesota secured four of the last five points to complete the sweep.
