Scott Turner, a former University of Illinois football player and current United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, will act as the honorary captain for the Illinois football team during their game against top-ranked Ohio State. The game is set for Saturday at 11 a.m. CT and will be broadcast on FOX.

Turner played for the Fighting Illini from 1991 to 1994, starting in 15 games—12 as a defensive back and three as a wide receiver. After his college career, he was selected in the seventh round of the 1995 NFL Draft by Washington and went on to play nine seasons in the NFL with the Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers, and Denver Broncos.

In February 2025, Turner was confirmed by the United States Senate as the 19th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Before this role, he served as Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council.

Turner is originally from Richardson, Texas, where he attended J.J. Pearce High School. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1995.
