Illinois football has announced that Howard Griffith, a former standout running back for the team, will serve as honorary captain when the #23 Illinois Fighting Illini face #21 USC on Saturday. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. CT and will be broadcast on FOX.

Griffith played three seasons as a starter for Illinois and was captain and MVP of the 1990 Big Ten co-championship team. He holds the school record for career rushing touchdowns with 31 and set an NCAA single-game record by scoring eight rushing touchdowns against Southern Illinois in 1990.

After his college career, Griffith was selected in the ninth round of the 1991 NFL Draft. He played professionally with the Los Angeles Rams, Carolina Panthers, and Denver Broncos. With Denver, he contributed to two Super Bowl championships, including scoring two touchdowns in Super Bowl XXXIII.

Griffith has also worked as an analyst for the Illini Radio Network before joining Big Ten Network in 2007. He continues to appear on studio shows covering football throughout the season.
