After opening the season with three straight wins, including a shutout against Western Michigan, the #9-ranked Illinois football team will begin its Big Ten schedule on the road against #19 Indiana. The game is set for Saturday, September 20 at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Indiana, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT. Tickets for the matchup are sold out.

This meeting marks only the second time in history that Illinois and Indiana have faced each other as ranked teams. The last such encounter occurred on October 28, 1950, when #12 Illinois defeated #19 Indiana by a score of 20-0 in Champaign.

NBC will broadcast the game nationally. Radio coverage will be provided by the Busey Bank Illini Sports Network, featuring Scott Beatty on play-by-play, Carey Davis as analyst, and Michael Martin reporting.

Illinois head coach Bret Bielema is scheduled to hold his weekly press conference on Monday at 1 p.m. CT. Fans can watch it live at FightingIllini.com/live.

Illinois is seeking its first road win as a top-10 team since October 27, 1990. The program entered the Associated Press top ten on September 7 for the first time since December 2001 and holds its highest September ranking since Dick Butkus' senior season in 1964. This year’s preseason ranking of #12 was Illinois’ highest since starting at #11 in 1990 and is the ninth-highest preseason ranking in program history since the AP Preseason Poll began in 1950.

The team has started this season with zero turnovers through three games—a feat not achieved since at least 1995—and currently ranks second nationally in turnover margin (+6). Over the past two seasons (2024-25), Illinois has thrown only six interceptions, tied for second-fewest among FBS programs during that span.

On offense, Illinois averages 45 points per game—15th best nationally and seventh in the Big Ten. Quarterback Luke Altmyer ranks fifth in conference passing efficiency (182.0) and is one of three Big Ten quarterbacks with eight or more passing touchdowns without an interception this season. Wide receiver Hank Beatty leads both Power-4 conferences and the Big Ten in all-purpose yards (466) and stands fourth within the conference for receiving yards (289).

Defensively, Illinois allows just 7.3 points per game—fifth fewest nationwide—and leads or shares national leads in several categories including fumble recoveries (5) and forced fumbles (4). Preseason All-American outside linebacker Gabe Jacas leads the Big Ten with six-and-a-half sacks while tying for most forced fumbles nationally.

Special teams contributions include Hank Beatty ranking sixth nationally in punt return average (25.3 yards) and being one of only two players nationwide to record a receiving touchdown, rushing touchdown, and punt return touchdown this season.
