Illinois will play its first road football game of the 2025 season against Duke on Saturday, September 6, at Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, North Carolina. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Central Time and will be broadcast on ESPN.
The Fighting Illini enter the matchup ranked #12 in both the Preseason AP Top 25 and US LBM Coaches Polls. This marks Illinois’ highest preseason ranking since 1990 and their first appearance in both preseason polls since 2008. Last year, Illinois finished #16 in the final AP Top 25 poll, which was their best finish since placing #12 in 2001.
Illinois opened its season with a decisive 52-3 win and seeks to extend its current five-game winning streak, which dates back to last season. The team closed out the previous year with three consecutive victories away from home against Rutgers, Northwestern (at Wrigley Field), and South Carolina (Cheez-It Citrus Bowl).
Quarterback Luke Altmyer currently ranks fifth nationally in passing efficiency and tenth in completion percentage after his performance in Week 1, where he threw for 217 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Hank Beatty set a new school record for single-game punt return yardage with 133 yards against Western Illinois, surpassing Red Grange’s mark set in 1923. Beatty also leads all players nationally in all-purpose yards per game.
Duke comes into the contest with a win over Elon led by quarterback Darian Mensah, who transferred from Tulane after throwing for over 2,700 yards last season.
