Three assistant coaches from the University of Illinois track and field program—Heath Baldwin, Ayden Owens-Delerme, and Deanna Price—will participate in the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan, from September 13 to 21. They will join high jumper Rose Yeboah at the event.
Rose Yeboah, who was the 2024 NCAA Champion and the 2025 national runner-up in the high jump, will compete for Ghana. She qualified for the championships with a personal-best jump of 1.97 meters (6-5 1/2), which also secured her a spot at last summer’s Paris Olympic Games. "She qualified with her personal-best leap of 1.97m (6-5 1/2) that she used to win her national high jump title. That mark also qualified her to the Paris Olympic Games last summer and she's ready to represent Ghana on the world stage again in a few weeks," according to university officials.
Ayden Owens-Delerme earned his place at the World Championships by setting a Puerto Rican national record in the decathlon with a score of 8,732 points at last April’s Mt. SAC Relays. This will be his third appearance at senior World Athletics Championships after competing in both 2022 and 2023 events. "Owens-Delerme also qualified to the World Championships with a personal-best score in the decathlon of 8,732 points. He recorded that mark last April at the Mt. SAC Relays and it's also the Puerto Rican national record. This will be his third senior World Athletics Championships as competed in both the 2022 and 2023 championships," said university representatives.
Deanna Price became USA Champion hammer thrower with a throw of 78.53 meters (257-7) at this month’s USATF Outdoor National Championships, qualifying for her fifth appearance at these championships. Heath Baldwin finished as runner-up in decathlon at USATF Outdoor Nationals with a score of 8,407 points and will attend his first outdoor World Championships as an athlete.
The schedule includes Deanna Price competing in hammer throw qualification rounds on September 14 and finals on September 15; Rose Yeboah entering high jump qualification on September 18 and finals on September 21; while Heath Baldwin and Ayden Owens-Delerme are set for decathlon events across September 20–22.
