Illinois soccer secured a 1-0 victory over Bowling Green on Sunday, improving their season record to 2-0-0. The only goal of the match came in the 55th minute when Sydney Stephens scored after receiving a pass from Ashlyn Adams. Stephens created space and sent a shot from the top of the penalty area that struck the crossbar before going in.
Both teams had opportunities during the first half. Illinois goalkeeper Izzy Lee made two important saves, including one in the 32nd minute when she recovered after being caught off her line and another on a low shot toward the right side of the net. Lee recorded her second consecutive shutout this season, marking the seventh clean sheet of her collegiate career.
After taking the lead, Illinois controlled possession for most of the second half and did not allow Bowling Green any shots in that period. Cayla Jackson nearly added another goal for Illinois with a header from an Ashley Stellon set piece, but Bowling Green’s goalkeeper made a save at the lower left corner.
The Fighting Illini will have a week off before their home opener against Boston College on Monday, August 25 at Demirjian Park.
