The University of Illinois has announced a series of upgrades to Memorial Stadium, aimed at enhancing the experience for fans attending Fighting Illini football games. Over the next two seasons, more than $9 million will be invested in a new wireless internet system set to debut in 2025. Additional plans include new videoboards, a sound system, and LED lighting by 2026.
"The upcoming Memorial Stadium projects are a key step in our commitment to providing one of the best college football experiences in the nation," stated Josh Whitman, Director of Athletics. He expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from fans and highlighted past investments totaling over $20 million in infrastructure improvements at this historic venue.
The installation of wireless internet is expected to improve ticketing, concessions, and retail operations starting with the season opener against Western Illinois on August 29. Access will expand to seating areas by the Homecoming game against USC on September 27. The system is designed to handle high traffic demands during events.
In 2026, all videoboards at Memorial Stadium will be upgraded. Enhancements include a main videoboard above the south end zone and additional boards throughout the stadium. A total of 19 new video displays are planned.
A new sound system featuring speakers throughout the stadium and an LED lighting system are also scheduled for completion by 2026. These upgrades aim to enhance experiences for fans and athletes alike.
Other planned enhancements include repaired concrete steps along the west side of the stadium, a new southeast entrance, and improvements to the south elevation.
The Fighting Illini's first game of the 2025 season is set for August 29 against Western Illinois at Memorial Stadium with kickoff at 6:30 p.m. CT.
