State Representative Brandun Schweizer | Illinois General Assembly
State Representative Brandun Schweizer of Danville expressed his disapproval following Governor JB Pritzker's signing of the FY26 budget. The budget, amounting to $55.2 billion, includes $1 billion in tax increases, along with one-time revenue streams and fund sweeps.
“It is appalling that the Governor would sign such a bloated budget, given his stern warning to lawmakers that if they ask for increased spending, they must identify where cuts should be made,” stated Rep. Schweizer. He criticized the Democrats for what he described as a "tax-and-spend" approach that he believes harms Illinois families who are already struggling financially.
Schweizer pointed out that the FY26 budget represents an increase of $2 billion compared to the previous year and warned that this pattern could lead to more severe financial issues in the future. “Next year, we will be in an even worse spot than this year. I urge my Democrat colleagues to buckle down and examine the damage caused by bloated spending year after year,” he added.
House Republicans have consistently opposed tax hikes and new spending initiatives. They proposed numerous policies aimed at fostering economic growth for families and businesses, but these measures were not adopted by the Democrat Supermajority.
