FOIA Request to Champaign Police Department Regarding Fake License Seizures on June 3, 2025.
As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at Chambana Sun have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Champaign Police Department. Our request seeks access to specific records concerning fake license seizures under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140.
The requested information includes:
1. A list of all individuals who have received related letters from January 1, 2024, until today's date.
2. The number of payers and the total amount collected during this period.
Access to these public records is crucial for us as media professionals in fulfilling our responsibility to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as members of the media.
This request is made with support from The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a Missouri-based non-profit organization that assists news media companies and public advocacy groups in investigating state and federal governmental agencies.
