The Illinois Department of Agriculture has implemented Illinois Public Act 103-0976, effective from January 1, 2025. This legislation mandates that municipalities and government entities provide a minimum of 24 hours' notice to the public before applying pesticides on public rights of way within municipal boundaries.

The required notice must detail the location and date of intended applications, the name and type of pesticide, the reason for use, concentrations, any special instructions, as well as the name and telephone number of the applicator. Additionally, it should include contact information for the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Notices must be in writing and posted at least 24 hours prior to application. Acceptable formats for these notices include newsletters, websites, calendars, or other communications currently used by government entities.

As there is no specified notification template at present, the City of Champaign will fulfill this requirement by releasing a monthly information notice regarding general pesticide use across the city by its employees and contractors. These notices will be available on the City’s website and shared through social media platforms. Additional notifications may be issued for specific areas if necessary.

The notification for this month is accessible online.
