The Illinois men's and women's track and field teams competed in the Big Ten Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. On the first day of competition, Cody Johnston achieved a significant milestone by winning the pole vault event with a record-breaking jump of 5.64 meters (18-6). This victory marked him as the first Illini man to win this title in 31 years.
Johnston expressed his satisfaction with the win, stating, "It feels great, it's a relief. I expected to win it (my) freshman year indoor and outdoor, but I didn't come through, so I am happy I came through today." He credited the facility and atmosphere for his performance: "This facility, being here in Oregon is always a blessing. The conference also makes a difference, it always pushes everybody."
In other events, Phethisang Makhethe earned a silver medal in the women's hammer throw with a national record for South Africa at 68.66 meters (225-3), which is also second-best in program history. Sophia Beckmon and Halle Hill qualified for Sunday's finals in their respective races.
Other notable performances included Javaris Ambrose's fourth-best hammer throw for Illinois at 62.99 meters (206-8) and Faith Deering's fifth-best at 59.90 meters (196-6). In combined events, Melissa Wullschleger ranked second in the heptathlon with strong performances across multiple disciplines.
Cody Johnston reflected on his preparation leading up to this event: "It has been a little rough. We switched to a different pole brand four weeks ago...but I knew what we had to do." His achievement stands as one of Illinois' top moments during these championships.
The Fighting Illini will continue competing on May 17th as they aim for further success in upcoming events.
