Illinois head coach Bret Bielema has agreed to a new six-year contract that will extend through the end of the 2030 season, as announced by Illinois Director of Athletics Josh Whitman. The agreement awaits approval from the University of Illinois Board of Trustees at their meeting on May 22.
Bielema has led Illinois to notable achievements in his first four seasons, securing 28 wins, 18 Big Ten victories, and a victory in the 2024 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. Under his leadership, Illinois has gained national attention with appearances in the AP Top 25 and College Football Playoff rankings. His tenure has seen two New Year's Bowls, three national award finalists, 11 All-Americans, and 12 NFL Draft picks since he took over in 2021.
"I want to thank Bret for his exceptional leadership and bold vision for the future of Fighting Illini Football," said Whitman. "I am grateful to Bret and Jen for their trust in our program and their long-term commitment to the University of Illinois."
Bielema expressed gratitude towards various stakeholders: "Thank you to Josh Whitman, our administration, and the Board of Trustees for their continued commitment and support for our football program."
During Bielema's time at Illinois, the team has become known as one of the most physical programs nationally. In 2024, they tied a school record with ten wins and were ranked by the CFP selection committee for four consecutive weeks—a program first. The Illini capped off an impressive season by defeating #14 South Carolina in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
The contract extension includes potential performance-based extensions through June 30, 2031. Bielema's salary would start at $7.7 million annually with retention incentives beginning at $700,000 on July 1, 2026. Additional bonuses include a signing bonus along with longevity and performance bonuses.
The University's Board of Trustees is set to review Coach Bielema's extension during its scheduled meeting on May 22.
