Champaign Police responded to a shooting incident at an apartment building in the 2400 block of N. Neil Street on Saturday, May 24, at 5:09 p.m. Officers found a four-year-old child inside an apartment with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the foot. The child received immediate aid from officers and the Champaign Fire Department before being transported to a local hospital, where they remain in stable condition.

The investigation revealed that the child was under the care of a 17-year-old male family member when a firearm discharged inside the apartment, resulting in the child's injury. The teenager was arrested on charges including reckless discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm. Officers searched the apartment and canvassed the area for witnesses and video footage to assist in their investigation. Despite an arrest, the investigation is ongoing, and details are limited due to the ages involved. Updates will be provided as available.

The Champaign Police urge anyone with additional information to call 217-351-4545. Information can be shared privately or anonymously through Crime Stoppers by calling 217-373-8477 (TIPS), visiting 373tips.com, or using the “P3 Tips” mobile app.

Crime Stoppers ensures anonymity by routing calls through a third-party national call center that forwards information to law enforcement without using caller ID tracking or recording conversations.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
