FOIA Request to City of Champaign Regarding Newly Registered Businesses on May 7, 2025.

As part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability in local governmental affairs, Chambana Sun has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the City of Champaign. Our request seeks access to records detailing newly registered businesses within the city from the previous week. Specifically, we have asked for information that includes the business name, business number, business type, business address, issued date, status, and registered agent name.

Our role as a media organization is crucial in gathering and disseminating news to the public. Access to these public records will enable us to fulfill our professional responsibilities by holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency. We believe this information is vital for informing the community about local economic developments and changes in the business landscape.

Additionally, as members of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy—a non-profit organization dedicated to investigating state and federal governmental agencies—we leverage Freedom of Information and Sunshine Laws to provide insights into government actions. This effort helps inform the American electorate by pulling back the curtain on governmental activities.

We have requested that this information be provided in electronic format and have also sought a fee waiver given our status as media professionals engaged in public service journalism. We await a response from the City of Champaign and remain committed to providing comprehensive coverage on this matter.
