The Champaign Police Department is inviting the community to participate in events during National Police Week, which runs from May 12 to 18, 2025. The week's activities aim to honor fallen officers, celebrate employee achievements, and educate the public about law enforcement through the biennial CPD Open House.
“Police Week allows all of us the chance to pause and reflect on the work we do and the incredible teammates who do it,” stated Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler. He added that they are excited to offer a behind-the-scenes look at the department with tours, exhibits, and demonstrations.
A memorial ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, May 13, at 9:00 a.m. at West Side Park in Champaign. This event will honor law enforcement officers worldwide who have died in service and pay special tribute to three local officers: Thomas Dodsworth (end of watch July 6, 1913), Robert Tatman (end of watch November 25, 1967), and Christopher Oberheim (end of watch May 19, 2021).
An awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday, May 14, at 5:30 p.m. at the Champaign Police Department. It will recognize exceptional efforts by officers and staff over the past year with honors such as Employee of the Year and Officer of the Year.
The Open House event will occur on Saturday, May 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., also held at the police department's facility. This family-friendly event aims to provide insight into CPD operations through activities like vehicle displays and unit demonstrations including Crisis Negotiation Unit, Crime Scene Unit, SWAT team presentations along with historical displays.
National Police Week has been observed since its inception in 1962 during Peace Officers Memorial Day week on May 15. All planned events are open to public participation as Champaign Police extends an invitation for community involvement.
