On April 24, 2025, firefighters and staff from the Champaign Fire Department, Building Safety Department, and Equity & Engagement department joined forces to promote fire safety within the community. Their collaborative effort involved canvassing the neighborhoods around Spaulding Park. This initiative was in preparation for the Fire Alarm Blitz, planned for Saturday, May 3rd.

The Fire Alarm Blitz, which is sponsored by the Sheehan Family, is an important community service program focused on providing preventative fire safety measures to families in need. During this event, trained personnel will test existing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in residents' homes. If families lack these devices or if their detectors are not functioning, the team will install new smoke and carbon monoxide detectors at no cost. The goal of this initiative is to lower the risk of fire-related injuries and fatalities by ensuring that vulnerable households have early warning systems in place.
