SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Representatives from nearly 50 diverse agricultural organizations, as well as University of Illinois Extension and the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, gathered at the state Capitol for the 55th annual Illinois Agriculture Legislative Day. The event, organized by the Illinois Department of Agriculture, aimed to advocate for the agricultural industry, a significant part of Illinois' economy, known for its production of soybeans, corn, swine, and many specialty crops.

Governor J.B. Pritzker, Lt. Governor Juliana Stratton, and Director Costello delivered opening remarks. Additional comments came from Senate Agriculture Committee Chair Doris Turner (D-Springfield) and House Agriculture Committee Minority Spokesperson Charlie Meier (R-109th District).

Germán Bollero, dean of the College of ACES, stated, "We are proud to stand alongside our partners to advocate for policies that support the continued growth and sustainability of this vital industry." He emphasized the college's commitment to advancing research, education, and outreach in agriculture.

Hundreds of young leaders from organizations like 4-H, FFA, and Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences took part, underscoring the importance of youth in the sector's future. Illinois 4-H Youth Leadership Team Chair Janella Neary addressed lawmakers, noting the program's reach to nearly 200,000 youth aged five to 18 and shared her personal growth journey through 4-H and its offerings in agriculture, STEM, and leadership development.

Neary expressed her gratitude towards 4-H, saying, "I would not be the person I am today without 4-H and the guidance given to me by my mentors." She highlighted the program's and University of Illinois Extension's positive impact on families throughout legislative districts.

Participants discussed key issues such as sustaining family farms, expanding agricultural education, enhancing mental health resources in rural areas, and protecting farmland with legislators.
