Matias Habib of Kendall County has been chosen to join the 2025 National Ag Day Student Leadership Program as a 4-H delegate. Sponsored by the Agriculture Council of America, this program aims to engage young leaders to promote awareness of the agricultural industry's importance in society and the economy.

Habib was among three 4-H representatives recommended to participate in this initiative, which gathers students from 4-H, FFA, AFA, and MANRRS. The goal is for these students to advocate for agriculture and engage with national stakeholders.

“I gained plenty of experience with creating meaningful connections with others in agriculture and bettering my communication skills in general,” Habib said.

Participants had the opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., where they met with industry leaders and policymakers, toured key agricultural institutions, and took part in discussions focused on agricultural policy and leadership.

“I can use the skills I practiced during this experience to connect with potential internships and make contacts in my career,” added Habib.

Illinois 4-H, part of the University of Illinois Extension's youth development program, aims to develop youth into leaders equipped for both life and future careers. The program is administered through the College of Agriculture, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences and emphasizes hands-on learning experiences.

Research supports the impact of the 4-H program, showing that its participants are more likely to contribute to their communities, make healthier choices, be civically active, and engage in STEM programs.
