URBANA, Ill. -- The Fighting Illini softball team secured a victory over Valparaiso with a score of 5-1 at Eichelberger Field on Wednesday.
The win advanced Illinois to an overall record of 18-20, while Valparaiso's record fell to 17-22.
Karley Yergler started as the pitcher for Illinois and earned the win. The right-handed pitcher completed five innings, allowing only one run on three hits, with one walk and five strikeouts. Additional pitching support came from Danika Frazier and Briana Bower, who helped restrict Valparaiso to 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Illinois' offense outperformed Valparaiso's, achieving 7 hits to the Beacons’ 3. Eileen Donahue led the offensive effort, hitting 2-for-3, including a grand slam contributing four RBIs, marking her achievement as the 55th grand slam in the program's history. Adisyn Caryl also added to the team’s success with a home run, finishing 1-for-3. Lizzie Stiverson supported the team with two hits in three at-bats.
The Fighting Illini will next face Purdue in a Big Ten series. The first game is scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m. CT on B1G+.
